Objectives and Profile

Objectives of the program:
The graduates must receive a broad and in-depth education in the field of natural resources at an academic level. 
The objective of the course is for the graduates to be capable of analyzing the processes in this field, describing them quantitatively, and taking part in decision-making processes. 

Profile of the graduates: 
The MSc graduates are capable to contribute to an integrated utilization and management of the natural resources along the United Nations (UN) guidelines of sustainable development. 
Graduates of this program should be better trained to work as staff member/researcher/project manager/lecturer/advisor in different institutions and/or organizations such as governmental agencies, semi- governmental agencies, non- governmental agencies, private sector, consultancies, international/regional organization, education and research centers.

End terms of the program: 
Knowledge: 
1. Has obtained basic knowledge on the issues of all the following subjects, and a more in-depth knowledge in one or more of the subjects: land and water management, renewable       energy, mineral resources, sustainable forestry, sustainable agriculture, biodiversity and natural products.
2. Has obtained sufficient insight in sustainable management of natural resources.
3. Has obtained sufficient knowledge and insight to study and evaluate projects in the field of sustainable management of natural resources.

Skills:
1. Is capable of identifying relevant problems in the field of sustainable management of natural resources. 
2. Is capable of collecting adequate and specific data in a socially responsible manner. 
3. Is capable of interpreting data and make a critical analysis.
4. Is capable of coming up with adequate and sound solution models for complex problems. 
5. Is capable of reporting in a professional manner, transferring knowledge to others, hold presentations with a scientific basis and publish them at academic level.
6. Is capable of monitoring and evaluating the implemented solutions.

Attitude:
1. Is capable of taking the initiative, willing to be a leader and to work together with others.
2. Is capable of providing assistance in the field of sustainable management of natural resources.

Structure and Content

Structure and content of the program:
The SMNR program accounts for a total of 120 ECTS, of which 30 ECTS are reserved for the master thesis. The remaining 90 ECTS are distributed over the two years of the SMNR program, according to prerequisite requirements and logical sequence.
A list of mandatory courses is proposed, that serves to meet the end terms of all future graduates, irrespective of specialization in one or more domains. These mandatory courses account for a total of 42 ECTS in the first year and 16 ECTS in the second year.
A limited list of elective courses serves to allow for in depth study of one or more domains, and provides flexibility towards the job market. It equally allows for tailoring of the study program in function of personal interest. This elective package accounts for 18 ECTS in the first year and 14 ECTS in the second year.
In function of the curriculum of the preceding BSc degree (or equivalent), a package of maximum 15 ECTS can be considered for every BSc (this decision is taken on a case by case decision), in which case the elective package will decrease accordingly. 
The topic of the Master thesis may require a appropriate selection of elective courses.

Admission and registration

Admission requirements:
Applicants should have in June 2009 a BSc degree in the field of technological sciences from the FTeW, AdeKUS or equivalent. Each application will be reviewed on an individual bases and after a selection procedure, maximum 30 students will only be allowed for registration. Additional requirements will be announced in August 2009. 

Tuition fee and registration fee:
An annual registration fee for registration in the master program at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname will need to be paid and in addition an annual tuition fee for the master program will need to be paid at the Faculty of Technology. The amounts will be announced in August 2009.
