Objective: To educate sufficient MSc students in Sustainable Management of Natural Resources (SMNR) at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname (AdeKUS) and to increase the academic standards of research in the technical fields of SMNR (renewable energy, mineral resources, land and water management) at AdeKUS, and to contribute to Sustainable Management of Natural Resources resulting in the further development of society
Project coordinator : Nurmohamed R. Ph.D. and Prof. A. Vervoort
Time frame : April 2008 - April 2012
Funding : VLIR
Master education and research programme on sustainable management of natural resources (bio)
Objective: To educate sufficient MSc students in Sustainable Management of Natural Resources (SMNR) at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname (AdeKUS) and to increase the academic standards of research in the technical fields of SMNR (biodiversity, sustainable agriculture, sustainable forestry, natural products) at AdeKUS, and to contribute to Sustainable Management of Natural Resources resulting in the further development of society
Project coordinator : Toelsie, J. Ph.D. and Prof. R. De Wulf.
Time frame : April 2008 - April 2012
Funding : VLIR
Development of a Suriname Water Resources Information System (SWRIS)
Objective: To promote human resource development (knowledge and techniques) on integrated water resources management (IWRM) in Suriname; to increase the awareness of fresh water resources systems in Suriname; to share water resources information in Suriname and outside Suriname (trough a website)
Project coordinator : Nurmohamed R. Ph.D
Time frame : Oct 2009 - Sept 2010
Funding : WWF, VLIR
Management of water resources in north-west Suriname under climate change conditions
Objective: To develop water resources management strategies 2050 for sufficient drinking water supply in urban and rural areas and sufficient irrigation water supply in the agriculture areas in district Nickerie (Suriname) by 2050: to estimate the quantity of surface water resources from rivers, swamps and other resources and the effects under climate change conditions by 2050 using field measurements and hydrological modeling and climate modeling techniques; to estimate the amount of groundwater resources and the effects under climate change conditions by 2050 using field measurements and hydrological modeling and climate modeling techniques; to analyze the quality of ground and surface water resources (salt content); to develop water resources management strategies
Project coordinator : Nurmohamed R. Ph.D
Time frame : Oct 2009 - Oct 2011
Funding : VLIR, IFS
Comprehensive Water Management Pilot Project
A case study- North West Suriname (phase 1)
Objective: Develop a holistic approach for a sustainable integrated water management in the MCP area. The project will be divided into two phases, phase one entails a feasibility study on technical and financial feasibility on application of remote sense devices to foster the present water management level, and elaborate on alternative approaches for maintenance of the canal. Specific objectives for phase 1: To enhance and promote wise use of the freshwater resources of the MCP area; Develop a project proposal for setting up an infrastructure for integrated water management site at MCP; To set up an infrastructure for field data collection, including data transfer and exchange; Develop protocol for environment friendly maintenance of MCP canal; Training technicians remote sensing, collecting and operation of instruments (devices) and processing of data.
Project coordinator : Prof. Dr. Naipal, S.
Development of modelling tools in decision support instruments for coastal zone management (CZM)
Objective: The development of a set of models which will help to understand the morphodynamic development of the Suriname Coast. Models need data. Therefore, data collection forms an important part of the project, involving both the collection of available data from third parties, as well as the collection of new data with new measurement equipment. Finally, all these data need to be processed, stored and managed. The third major part consists of the set-up of a data base for coastal zone data and information.
Project coordinator : Prof. Dr. Naipal, S.
Time frame : 1 Aug. 2005 - 31 Juli 2009
Feasibility study: Wind energy possibilities for electricity generation in Suriname
Objective: to collect wind speed data in a scientific correct way for developing wind energy in Suriname. This means that we are focusing at the introduction of methods of data collection of wind speed in Suriname at two different heights (20 and 30 m). The specific goals are:
- identify potential sites in Suriname in this case Galibi at the north-east side of Suriname, with existing possibilities to utilize wind energy for electricity generation.
- determine the roughness factor and wind class for that area in Suriname.
Project coordinator : C. Wijngaarde MSc and A. Kalpoe MSc.
Time frame : 2009-2010
Funding : VLIR, CARICOM
The Anton de Kom University of Suriname has the following research facilities:
